‘Construction criteria not being followed in Handwara’

Handwara, July 27 :  Throwing all rules to winds, Municipal Committee Handwara and other concerned departments have granted permission to an ‘influential’ party to construct a multi-story building along By-pass road in North Kashmir’s Handwara.

Insiders in Municipal Committee told news agency KNT that no rules were followed while granting permission to some people for the construction of a multi-storey building. “A building owner has to construct his building 70 feet away from the road but no such norms were followed here,” insiders said.

The multi-story building is coming up Braripora area of Handwara.

This construction has raised eye-brows and questions about the conviction and rectitude of Handwara Municipal Committee.

“If the plinth of the same building was demolished few months ago, then how come the owner has been allowed to carry on with the construction work,” locals ask.

Locals told that only front side of the under construction building was demolished a couple of months ago. “At that very particular day when only some front part of the building was dismantled, we started doubting the conviction of Municipal officials,” they said.

When contacted, Chairman, Municipal Committee Handwara, Masroor Banday passed the buck saying it is the job of Roads and Buildings Department to provide ‘No Objection Certificates (NOC's) to people.

When the same matter was brought into the notice of ADC Handwara Nazir Ahmad, he swiftly swung into action and sent a team of officials headed by Tehsildar Handwara Dr Aijaz Ahmad on spot to ascertain the facts.

Tehsildar Handwara confirmed that the building is being constructed leaving only 50 instead of 70 feet on the road side.

People demand that criteria of leaving 70 feet along road side should be followed as law is same for everyone.
